Did you know that your skin, is actually your largest organ? It’s a bit mind blowing when you think about it like that, but in reality, it protects all of your other organs, bones, muscles, ligaments and nerves. So, shouldn’t we be as conscious about what we put on our skin?
I’ve said it before, but up to 60% of what you put on your skin is absorbed in 27 seconds, which means what you put on your skin can have a lasting effect not just on your skin, but on your general health and wellbeing.
A lot of the ingredients that are found in traditional skincare products i.e. face washes, lotions, sunscreen, have now been linked to health issues. Allergies, eczema, cancer, hormonal disruption, and in some cases reproductive problems. So, what you put on your skin matters, the wrong thing can make you sick!
Here are some of the ingredients we think you should be on the lookout for:
Can actually disrupt your endocrine systems from functioning normally, it’s also a toxic metal, in case the first bit wasn’t enough to convince you. It’s in almost every personal care product, but most especially in deodorants that include an antiperspirant.
DEA – Diethanolamine
This is what gives you the silky, smooth feeling after you use a facial wash or put on a lotion. It makes creams and lotions silkier and less acidic to the skin. The bad news… it has been shown to actually cause skin irritations, and in lab tests on mice it was shown to lead to liver cancer.
MEA - Monoethanolamine
Colourless, viscous liquid that is an organic chemical, found in detergents, emulsifiers, polishers, pharmaceuticals and corrosion inhibitors to name a few. It’s only considered safe if you don’t leave it on your skin, which is why it is widely used in anything that rinses off. Like DEA above it has been shown to lead to liver cancer, but most importantly it can give you acne and several other dry skin conditions.
While this ingredient has been approved by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel, it is considered toxic because of its formaldehyde component. It can cause skin allergies and skin conditions that you may never have had to be developed.
UREA – Imidazolidinyl
Okay so it’s not actually made from urine, but it is a preservative that promotes water retention in the skin. However, its main use in a product is that it prevents the cosmetic product from spoiling. In doing so it releases formaldehyde. It can cause joint pain, skin allergies, headaches and even a loss of sleep. It’s usually found in skincare products, cosmetics, shampoos and conditioners and your detergent.
Is a by-product of petroleum, it coats the skin almost like plastic and can clog your pores. Which of course leads to acne production, and it stops your skin from being able to eliminate toxins. It’s usually found in creams, lotions, ointments and cosmetics
PARABENS – Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl, PropylSuper important, as these are not always put on the label’s ingredients list, but it’s in there… They are preservatives for the product, but they can contribute to your hormones being imbalanced. The weird part is they are found in almost every skincare product but most certainly in moisturisers and deodorants.
