At I.ANKA-EO we are all about returning to natural and organic skin treatments and that in so doing your skin will be beautiful.  One of the things we recommend to all of our customers is doing a bentonite clay mask, besides cleaning out your pores and encouraging new skin cells to flourish, it’s a great way to give your skin a reset.  With so many skin care products on the market and people constantly switching to find the best way to care for their skin, this can be an important step that you’re missing.

What is bentonite clay?

Bentonite clay is volcanic ash, quite literally the remnants of volcanoes.  It is natural, pure and untouched by chemicals, it’s also readily available all over the world.  Though the largest deposits are found near Montana and Wyoming, most precisely around Fort Benton, hence the name Bentonite clay.  Containing montmorillonite, this makes it flaky in texture when exposed to air or water.  It carries a negative charge that attracts substances with a positive charge.. bacteria, fungi and toxins to name a few.

Why bentonite clay is good for your skin

While none of us mean to expose our skin to harmful pollutants, it happens every day, technically the sun is a pollutant but when you add in the dust and grease.  Your skin is battling a lot and that’s where the negatively charged ions in the clay come in.  They attract and pull everything up to the skins surface.  Since the clay contains copper, iron, magnesium, potassium and silicate, it can really boost the health of your skin.

Bentonite Clay and Acne

The majority of acne is caused by excess sebum (the oil your body makes) secretion, this breeds acne causing bacteria… the end result is breakouts.  While you can generally find products that treat the symptom and not the cause of breakouts, performing a clay mask a few times a month can make a big difference.  The clay absorbs all the excess sebum from the top layer of your skin, which stops and can slow breakouts in the future.  It also cleans out your pores in a way that no cleanser and topical treatment can beat.  While brightening, toning, lightening scars and fighting fine lines and wrinkles.

We encourage all of our users to try a bentonite clay mask, you can even draw yourself a bath for an all over body treatment.  For those of you just venturing into bentonite clay use, see below for a simple recipe.

Bentonite Face Mask

  • 1 teaspoon bentonite clay
  • 1 teaspoon water or apple cider vinegar
  • Wooden spatula for mixing

Mix everything together in a ceramic bowl using the wooden spoon.  Once you have a consistent mixture (no lumps) begin liberally spreading it on your face and neck (watch out for your eyes).  Leave on for 20-25 mins or until it’s completely dry.  You will feel a tightening sensation while its drying, once dry rinse with warm (never hot) water.  Use one of our facial oil blends to seal it in on both your face and neck.

As always we advocate for a sustainable skin care routine, free of chemicals because we believe that having great skin shouldn't wreck the planet.  Instead using what the earth has given us can enhance and protect the skin we already have.  Would you like to read more?  Here are some of our most popular postings:
